Grand Theft Auto VI is three weeks out, and the next thing standing between most players and Vice City is not a release date but a progress bar. UNILAD Tech’s GTA 6 preload explainer lays out the key date: digital buyers can start downloading the game on Thursday, November 12, a full week before it unlocks on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The bigger question is whether your console has room for it. The best figure available right now is about 210 GB on PS5, which comes from a PlayStation Store tracker rather than Rockstar. On a launch PS5 that is nearly a third of the usable drive. On an Xbox Series S, if the Xbox version lands anywhere near that size, it would be more than half. Here is what is confirmed, what is still a reported number, and how to make room before November 12.
The short version
- Preload opens November 12 for digital pre-orders. The game launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is still no PC date.
- The PS5 download is reportedly about 210 GB, per the PlayStation Game Size account on X. Rockstar has not published an official size, and the Xbox figure is unconfirmed.
- Usable space: about 667 GB on a launch PS5, 364 GB on a Series S, 802 GB on a Series X.
- The physical edition is a download code in a box, so disc buyers need the same free space as everyone else.
- Xbox Series X|S games cannot run from a USB drive. PS5 games can be stored on one but must be moved back to play.
What Rockstar has actually confirmed
Rockstar opened pre-orders on June 25, 2026, at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition in the US (UK buyers pay £69.99 and £89.99). The pre-order announcement is where the preload date comes from: players who pre-order a digital version can begin pre-loading on November 12. Every pre-order also gets the Vintage Vice City Pack of cosmetics and vehicle and weapon patterns, and digital pre-orders add a free month of GTA+.
Preloading is not early access. It puts the files on your drive so the game is ready the moment it unlocks, and nothing more. What Rockstar has not done is publish an install size or an unlock time, and that is where most of the confusion this week is coming from.
The physical edition is the part that still stings for collectors. Boxed copies go on sale November 12, but they contain a download code rather than a disc, which Rockstar’s store frames as a way to support the preload. Two independent shops, Video Games Plus and Loot Box Gaming, said they would not stock it. A Rockstar Support email promising a physical copy “during the following months” briefly fueled hopes of a disc run, but The Hollywood Reporter, as relayed by MP1st, said a source explained the email referred to the code-in-box version. We looked at how that decision landed with fans when Rockstar started selling a GTA 6 vinyl record that ships on actual physical media.
When does GTA 6 unlock?
Rockstar has not announced launch times. PlayStation Store listings, however, point to a staggered midnight rollout. Coverage from Notebookcheck and Cheat Code Central describes 15 unlock windows across 63 countries and regions, starting with New Zealand at midnight NZDT, which is 3 a.m. PT on November 18, and ending with Mexico and Central America. For most of the US, the store data suggests 12:00 a.m. ET on November 19, which is 9 p.m. PT on November 18.
Treat those as storefront timestamps, not promises. They can move, and not every outlet’s reading of the listings matches. If you are planning a late night, check the store page on November 18 itself.
So how big is it?
The 210 GB figure comes from PlayStation Game Size, an X account that tracks PlayStation Store data. GamesRadar and VideoCardz both reported it, and Insider Gaming said it independently corroborated the number. It refers to the Standard Edition on PS5. Nobody has a reliable Xbox number yet, and there is no confirmed figure for the Series S version, which could differ from the Series X.
The figure also lines up with an earlier claim from the leaker known as Cyberleek, who said the playable build they had was over 200 GB. Day-one patches will add to it, so plan for more than 210 GB, not exactly 210 GB.
Ignore the bigger numbers floating around. A screenshot of an Xbox Store listing showing 676.7 GB went viral on Christmas Eve 2025 and was quickly debunked: the real Xbox listing showed no size, the fake referenced Xbox One, and the number itself was a “6-7” meme. For context, GTA V on PS5 takes up about 96 GB after its later updates, and Rockstar lists 105 GB of SSD space for GTA V Enhanced on PC. GTA VI is shaping up to need roughly twice that.
Space left after the install
The advertised capacity on the box is not what you get. The operating system and reserved space take a big slice, which is why an 825 GB PS5 shows about 667 GB free out of the box and a 512 GB Series S shows 364 GB. Here is where each console lands with a 210 GB GTA VI installed and nothing else.
| Console | Advertised | Usable | Left after 210 GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S | 512 GB | 364 GB | About 154 GB |
| PS5 (launch and 825 GB models) | 825 GB | 667 GB | About 457 GB |
| Xbox Series X | 1 TB | 802 GB | About 592 GB |
| PS5 Slim | 1 TB | About 848 GB | About 638 GB |
| PS5 Pro | 2 TB | About 1.86 TB | About 1.65 TB |
The Series S is the one to worry about. About 154 GB left over is enough for one or two other big games, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War alone took 136 GB on that console. Xbox figures assume the same 210 GB as PS5, which nobody has confirmed.
PS5 Pro owners have the opposite problem: plenty of space and a question mark over what they get. The PlayStation Store listing carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced label, but Rockstar has not said what that means in practice, and hopes for a 60fps mode are still just hopes. Demand for the Pro has been strange enough that, as we reported, a used PS5 Pro was selling for more than a new one at one retailer.
Adding storage: what works and what doesn’t
If you are short on space, the cheapest fix depends on the console, and the rules are not the same on both sides.
PS5. Every PS5 has an internal M.2 slot. Sony’s requirements call for a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD, with a recommended sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster, and a heatsink, either built in or added, that keeps the total within 110 x 25 x 11.25 mm. Capacities from 250 GB up to 8 TB are supported since a 2023 system update doubled the old 4 TB ceiling. Games run from that drive like they do from the internal one. Our guide to the best SSDs covers NVMe drives that fit the bill.
Xbox Series X|S. The fast option is a Storage Expansion Card that plugs into the back of the console. Seagate makes 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB cards, and Microsoft’s 2023 price cut set their list prices at $89.99, $149.99 and $279.99. Western Digital’s WD_Black C50 comes in 512 GB and 1 TB. Retail prices move around, so shop before you buy.
USB drives. This is the trap. Seagate’s support documentation is blunt: games optimized for Xbox Series X|S can be stored on a USB drive but must be moved back to internal storage or an expansion card to play. GTA VI is a current-generation-only game, so it will not run from a USB hard drive on either Xbox. The PS5 works the same way for PS5 games: extended USB storage can hold them, but you have to copy them back to play. A USB drive is still useful as a parking lot, because moving a game back is usually much faster than downloading it again.
How we got to November 19
This date has been a long time coming. Rockstar originally promised a fall 2025 release, then on May 2, 2025, pushed it to May 26, 2026. In November 2025, alongside Take-Two’s quarterly results, it moved the game again to November 19, 2026, apologizing for adding time to “what we realize has been a long wait” and saying the extra months would let it finish the game “with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”
As of this week, the date is holding. Take-Two reiterated November 19 when it reported quarterly results in August, Rockstar released its launch trailer on October 15, and pre-load is still set for November 12. Rockstar has not announced that the game has gone gold, meaning the final build has cleared Sony and Microsoft certification. That is not unusual this close to launch: Rockstar announced GTA V had gone gold just 24 days before release. A former Rockstar developer warned in August that another slip would not shock him, but nothing since has pointed that way.
The size of the bet
The interest has never been in doubt. The first trailer drew 90,421,491 YouTube views in 24 hours in December 2023, a Guinness World Record for a video game reveal. Rockstar says the second trailer passed 475 million views across platforms in its first day.
The money is less certain than the hype suggests. Take-Two expects $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion in net bookings for its fiscal year ending March 2027, a forecast built around GTA VI that came in below Wall Street’s expectations of about $9.13 billion when it was first issued. DFC Intelligence has forecast more than $3 billion in sales in the game’s first 12 months, with more than $1 billion arriving through pre-orders before launch.
Then there is the sick-day math. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick joked at the iicon industry event in April that he expected plenty of people to call in sick on November 19. This week, an economist’s projection that the launch could cost the US economy $1 billion in lost productivity made the rounds. It is an estimate built on survey answers about planned time off, not a measured loss, so treat it as a fun number rather than a forecast. The only thing you can control is whether your console is ready when the clock hits midnight.
