Hallmark’s most controversial TV show is coming to Netflix, and Virgin River fans need to stream it

    • All three seasons of The Way Home are coming to US Netflix on October 1st
    • Hallmark series stars Andie MacDowell, Chyler Leigh and Sadie Laflamme-Snow in lead roles
    • Season 4 is set to be released on Hallmark+ in 2026

I know you’re fed up of waiting for Virgin River season 7 to come around (and thanks to Emily in Paris season 5, we know that won’t be soon), so let me suggest something else coming to Netflix in the US on October 1: The Way Home.

The series has aired on Hallmark+ and the Hallmark Channel since 2023, but don’t let that put you off. The two streaming services have a history of sharing content (Chesapeake Shores performed incredibly well on Netflix, for example), and The Way Home was originally created there by programming lead Lisa Hamilton Daly, though she was later fired by Hallmark Media.

It makes sense, then, for all three seasons of the show to find their way back to its original home (pun intended), and it makes more sense that existing subscribers will love it. I should warn, you, though: the more its ridiculous storyline catches hold, the more you can’t stop watching.

Hallmark’s The Way Home lands on Netflix, and it’s a time-travel romance

Strap in, because here’s the basic storyline: Three generations of Landry family women – that’s Del (Andie MacDowell), daughter Kat (Chyler Leigh), and her daughter Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) – discover they can travel through time through the pond at the bottom of their garden.

While Del objects, Kat and Alice use the pond to uncover long-held secrets in their family history, with each season taking us back to a different point in time. Season 1 is all about the 1990s, season 2 the 1800s and the most-recent season 3 set in the 1970s.

This means we’ve frequently got two versions of one character on-screen, playing their older and younger selves simultaneously. This doesn’t just include characters that are still alive in the present day, but dead ones too. Are you still with me?

Add in some melodrama and romantic love triangles for the ages, and you can see why Virgin River fans will be chomping at the bit to get started on The Way Home. It goes without saying that a huge suspension of belief is required (some of these romances span across different timelines), and the lore can be as complex as it gets.

Even so, I’m a complete convert to it, just as I was to Virgin River a few years ago. Even though I can never fully believe what I’m seeing, I’ve found myself totally invested in the never-ending lore that the show produces. There’s no original content for the show to be adapted from, so we’re following it literally anywhere and everywhere.

If the season 3 cliffhangers didn’t do a good enough job of hyping us up for season 4 (due to be released at some point in 2026), the move to Netflix makes the show’s future all the more promising. A bigger audience base means bigger opportunities, and that could mean we’ve got plenty of seasons of time-travel ridiculousness to come.
