Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro on Wednesday in four finishes: black, silver, glacier and burgundy. Within forty-eight hours, people started noticing that several Android phones were already shipping in a shade close enough to make you look twice.
The Poco F9 Ultra is out in a deep red. Tecno’s Camon Slim 5G and Huawei’s Pura X View have both landed in something burgundy adjacent. Xiaomi’s 18 Fold has a colorway that would sit very comfortably on an Apple product table.
The obvious reaction is that Android brands copied Apple in two days, which would be impressive and is also impossible. Anodized aluminum finishes and colored back glass take the better part of a year to develop, qualify and manufacture at volume. Nobody turns that around over a weekend.
What actually happened is more interesting, and it explains why phone color has quietly turned into one of the few marketing levers left that still moves units.

The timeline nobody put in the headline
Apple’s color decisions leak earlier than almost anything else about an iPhone, because they have to. A finish has to be locked long before the phone is announced so that suppliers can produce millions of enclosures, and that means hundreds of people outside Apple know the color months ahead of the keynote.
Burgundy was one of the worst kept secrets of the cycle. It circulated for months under the name Dark Cherry, and by early summer the reporting had moved from “Apple might do a red” to Android prototypes reportedly showing up in that exact family.
So the rivals did not copy the iPhone 18 Pro. They copied the leak, months ago, and then waited for Apple to do the expensive part of the work: making the general public want that specific color.

Last year proved the strategy works
None of this would be happening if Cosmic Orange had flopped.
Apple put a loud orange on the iPhone 17 Pro in 2025, into a premium market where essentially every competitor was selling black, silver and muted blue. It became the shade people photographed, the one that showed up in every unboxing thumbnail, and analysts went on to credit it with helping push iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max sales in several markets. Orange then spread across the Android lineup through 2026, turning up on the Honor 600, the Oppo Find X9 Ultra and the Redmi Turbo 5 Max, among others.
That is the actual lesson rivals took. Not “orange sells,” but “whatever Apple makes the hero color becomes the color of the year, so be in it early.”
Why color is a serious line item
Phone hardware has converged to the point where most buyers cannot tell two flagships apart in a spec sheet. Color is the last feature that works from across a room, at a glance, with no explanation. It is the only upgrade a customer can show off without unlocking the device, and it is the cheapest differentiator on the entire bill of materials. Apple even specifies its hero shades against physical Pantone swatches rather than RGB values, so the finish reproduces identically across suppliers.
The copying runs in both directions
It is worth resisting the tidy version of this story where Apple innovates and Android photocopies, because this year’s announcements make that hard to sustain.
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable, arriving roughly seven years after Samsung shipped one, which Samsung was happy to point out. The hinge Apple built is genuinely impressive engineering, and it took around 100 parts to get to a 7.6 inch display, but it is not a new category.
The honest description is that the industry has become a single design conversation with a two way flow. Apple takes form factors and features from Android. Android takes colors, naming and marketing framing from Apple. Both sides insist the other one started it.

What it means if you are buying
Two practical notes.
First, hero colors hold resale value better than the safe ones, but only for the generation that made them famous. Cosmic Orange is worth a premium on a 17 Pro and is already starting to read as last year on anything else. If you are buying burgundy because it looks current, understand that its shelf life as “current” is about twelve months.
Second, if the color is the only reason you are drawn to the 18 Pro, the Android lookalikes are a genuinely rational choice and usually several hundred dollars cheaper. What they are not is the same phone. The variable aperture camera with six moving blades and the A20 Pro chip are the actual reasons to pay Apple’s price, and no amount of matching paint gets you those.
The color copying will keep happening because it works and because it is free. Every year Apple spends a keynote and a global ad campaign teaching people to want a particular shade, and every year a dozen companies get to sell that shade without paying for the lesson. There is no version of this that Apple can stop, and if you look at it from far enough away, no version where they especially want to.
