    Motorola’s Crystal Covered Razr Got the Headlines. The Cheaper Phone Has the Better Trick.

    Motorola showed up at IFA 2026 with three products and one of them was covered in crystals, so you can guess which one led the coverage.

    The Razr 70 with Crystals by Swarovski is a genuinely eye catching object and it costs $899.99, which is $100 more than the same phone without the sparkle. It photographs beautifully. It will sell perfectly well. It is also, in engineering terms, the least interesting thing Motorola announced that day.

    The phone worth reading about is the Edge 70 Plus, and specifically one line buried in its spec sheet: bypass charging. It is a feature that quietly extends how long your battery lasts before it starts to degrade, most people have never heard of it, and a lot of readers already own a phone that supports it without knowing.

    🔋 The short version

    • Motorola announced three things at IFA 2026: the Edge 70 Plus, a Swarovski trimmed Razr 70, and the Moto Watch Ultra.
    • The Edge 70 Plus supports bypass charging, which sends power from the charger straight to the processor and leaves the battery sitting idle.
    • That matters because heat is what kills batteries. Charging and gaming at the same time is the worst combination for long term battery health.
    • The rest of the phone is solid rather than exotic: a 6.78 inch 144Hz display rated at 5,200 nits, a 200MP main camera and a 6,500mAh battery.
    • Motorola has not announced Edge 70 Plus pricing. The Swarovski Razr is $899.99 and reaches US buyers on September 10.
    • You may already have this feature. Samsung, Asus, OnePlus and Google devices have shipped versions of it, usually hidden in a gaming menu.

    The Razr’s crystal treatment comes in a single finish Motorola calls Pantone Meteorite, with a quilted soft touch back and 35 Swarovski crystals in a shade called Silver Night, each positioned by hand. A larger 32 facet crystal sits in the hinge. US availability starts September 10 through Motorola’s own store and Amazon, with Verizon following on September 24.

    That is a fashion product with a phone inside it, and there is nothing wrong with that. Motorola has been doing this for a couple of years and it clearly works. But the $100 premium buys decoration, not capability, and the phone underneath is the same Razr you could already buy.

    Bypass Charging, and Why It Is Worth Understanding

    When you plug in a phone and then do something demanding with it, playing a game, recording video, running a navigation app on a hot day, two heat sources stack on top of each other. The processor is working hard and generating heat. The battery is simultaneously being charged, which generates heat of its own through the chemical process of storing energy. Those two happen inches apart inside a sealed aluminum and glass box with nowhere for the heat to go.

    Lithium ion cells hate that. Heat is the single largest factor in how quickly a battery loses capacity, more than the number of charge cycles for most people. A battery that spends a lot of its life warm will hold noticeably less charge after two years than one that does not.

    Bypass charging removes one of the two heat sources. Instead of routing power from the charger into the battery and then drawing from the battery to run the phone, it sends power from the charger directly to the components that need it. The battery sits in the middle doing nothing at all: not charging, not discharging, not generating heat.

    Two ways to power a phone that is plugged in and working hard

    Bypass charging only applies while the phone is plugged in. It does not change anything about how the phone behaves on battery. Heat is the largest single factor in long term battery capacity loss, ahead of cycle count for most users.

    There is a second benefit that is easy to miss. A battery held at 100 percent while you play a game does not just sit there. It drains slightly, tops back up, drains again, and each of those small top ups nibbles at the cell’s cycle count. Bypass charging stops that loop entirely, so a three hour gaming session plugged in costs you no measurable battery wear at all.

    What It Does Not Do

    It is worth being precise about the limits, because the feature is easy to oversell.

    Three things bypass charging will not fix

    It does not make the phone run cooler overall. The processor still produces the heat it was always going to produce. You have removed one contributor, not solved thermal throttling. If your phone slows down under load, that is a separate problem with its own set of causes and fixes.

    It does nothing when you are unplugged. This is a wired only feature, which means it helps during exactly the sessions where you happen to be near an outlet.

    It will not charge your phone while you use it. That is the trade. If you sit down at 20 percent, you will stand up at 20 percent.

    That last point is why the feature is normally tied to gaming modes rather than left on permanently. Most of the time you plug in a phone because you want the battery to fill up. Bypass charging is for the specific case where the phone is already charged enough and you would rather protect the cell than add a few percent.

    The Rest of the Edge 70 Plus

    Bypass charging aside, this is a competent upper mid-range phone rather than a flagship, and the spec sheet is honest about that.

    The 5,200 nit brightness figure deserves the usual caveat. Peak brightness numbers are measured on a small portion of the panel showing HDR content, not across the whole screen at once, so treat it as an indication that outdoor visibility will be good rather than a literal description of how bright the display gets.

    A 6,500mAh battery in a mainstream phone would have been remarkable two years ago and is now merely respectable, which says something about how quickly this particular spec has moved. The silicon carbon chemistry behind that shift is why Chinese phones routinely last two days now, and the ceiling keeps rising. At the same IFA show, another manufacturer turned up with a rugged phone carrying a 16,000mAh cell.

    The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is the honest limit here. It is a capable mid-range part that will handle everything most people do without complaint, but it is not going to keep pace with flagship silicon in sustained gaming, which is a mild irony given that bypass charging is a gaming oriented feature. Motorola has not announced pricing, and where this phone lands will decide whether that combination reads as good value or as an odd mix.

    The most practical takeaway has nothing to do with buying a Motorola.

    Bypass charging has quietly spread across Android over the last few years, and manufacturers have given it different names and buried it in different places. It is almost never in the main battery settings, which is why so few people know it exists.

    Where to look on phones that support it

    Samsung Galaxy: open Game Launcher, go to the Game Booster menu, and look for the option to pause USB Power Delivery.

    Asus ROG Phone: it is in the Armoury Crate app, and Asus has supported it longer than most.

    Others: check inside whatever gaming or performance mode your phone ships with. Search the settings for “bypass” or “pause charging” rather than “battery”, since that is rarely where it lives.

    If you find it, the sensible way to use it is not to leave it on permanently. Turn it on when you are plugged in and already at a comfortable charge, and you get the benefit without the frustration of a phone that refuses to fill up.

    The Bottom Line

    Motorola will sell a lot of crystal covered Razrs, and there is no argument to make against that. People like nice objects, $100 is a normal premium for a designer finish, and nobody buying one is confused about what they are paying for.

    The Edge 70 Plus is the more useful announcement, and not because its spec sheet is exciting, because it is not. It is useful because a mid-range phone shipping bypass charging as a normal listed feature is a small sign that battery longevity is starting to be treated as something worth advertising rather than something hidden three menus deep in a gaming app.

    Motorola still has to tell us what the phone costs, and that number will decide whether any of this matters commercially. But the feature is worth knowing about regardless of which phone you own, because there is a reasonable chance the device in your hand already does it and has never mentioned it.
