The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro look like they belong to different families, but they share more than most people expect: the same 6.3 inch 120Hz ProMotion screen, the same 18MP front camera, the same 48MP main and ultra wide resolution, and the same 40W fast charging. What the Pro adds is a 4x telephoto camera, the faster A19 Pro chip with 12GB of memory, three more hours of video playback, a vapor chamber for sustained performance and professional video formats. What it costs you is 29 grams of extra weight, a thicker body and, at launch, $300 more.
Quick answer
Buy the iPhone 17 if you want the best value: it has the same screen, the same selfie camera and nearly the same battery life for far less money, and Apple still sells it at $899. Buy the iPhone 17 Pro if you need optical zoom (4x and 8x), shoot serious video (ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2), play demanding games for long sessions, or want USB 3 speeds. Apple stopped selling the 17 Pro on September 9, 2026, so you now find it at carriers, retailers and resellers rather than in the Apple Store.
We built this comparison from Apple’s own technical specification pages, then checked the parts Apple does not publish, such as memory and battery capacity, against independent teardowns and filings. Below you will find the full spec table, a to scale size drawing of both phones, real photos side by side, and a straight answer for every kind of buyer.

The table makes the pattern obvious. Everything you touch and look at all day, the screen, the selfie camera, charging and the buttons, is the same. The differences are concentrated in three places: the camera system, the chip and cooling, and the body.
Size and design: which one is bigger?
On paper they are almost the same size. The iPhone 17 Pro is 0.4 mm taller and 0.4 mm wider, which you cannot see or feel. The real difference is depth and weight: the Pro is 8.75 mm thick against 7.95 mm, and it weighs 206 grams against 177 grams. That is about 16 percent heavier, a little more than the weight of an AA battery, and you notice it after an hour of holding the phone up to read or scroll.

The extra thickness is not wasted. Apple used it for a larger battery, the vapor chamber that keeps the A19 Pro from throttling, and the telephoto camera, which needs depth for its folded tetraprism lens. The visible difference is on the back. The iPhone 17 keeps the familiar vertical pill with two cameras in the corner. The 17 Pro has a camera plateau that runs the full width of the phone and holds three lenses, the flash and the LiDAR scanner.

The materials differ too. The iPhone 17 pairs an aluminum frame with a color infused glass back. The 17 Pro switched from titanium to an aluminum unibody, with a Ceramic Shield glass panel set into the back for MagSafe and wireless charging. Both have Ceramic Shield 2 on the front.
Color is a bigger choice on the iPhone 17, which comes in Black, White, Mist Blue, Sage and Lavender. The 17 Pro has three finishes: Silver, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue. Our guide to every iPhone 17 color shows each one in real light.
Display: no difference at all
This is the headline for most buyers. For the first time, the standard iPhone got the Pro screen. Both phones have a 6.3 inch OLED panel at 2622 by 1206 pixels, ProMotion with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, the Always On display and the same 3000 nit outdoor peak. Scrolling, animations and games look identically smooth on both. If the 60Hz screen was the reason you used to pay for a Pro, that reason is gone.
Performance: A19 vs A19 Pro
Both chips have a six core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, so everyday speed, opening apps, browsing and messaging feel the same. The A19 Pro pulls ahead in three ways:
- Graphics: a 6 core GPU against a 5 core GPU on the A19, both with Neural Accelerators for AI work.
- Memory: 12 GB of RAM against 8 GB, which helps keep more apps and browser tabs alive and gives on device AI models more room.
- Cooling: the vapor chamber spreads heat away from the chip, so the 17 Pro holds its top speed far longer in games, long 4K recordings and video exports.
In AnTuTu, the iPhone 17 scores around 2.16 million and the 17 Pro around 2.43 million, roughly 12 percent apart. You will not see that gap in daily use. Where it can show is long sessions of graphically heavy games, which the vapor chamber in the Pro is designed to sustain at higher performance.
Cameras: the biggest real difference
Both phones have a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra wide camera, and both get the new 18MP Center Stage front camera that can shoot a landscape selfie while you hold the phone upright. So for selfies, group shots and everyday photos in good light, the results are very close.
The gap opens in two places. First, zoom. The iPhone 17 has no telephoto lens; its 2x option is a 12MP crop from the center of the main sensor. Past 2x, it is digital zoom. The 17 Pro adds a dedicated 48MP telephoto at 100 mm (4x), plus a 12MP optical quality 8x crop at 200 mm, and digital zoom up to 40x. For concerts, sports, kids on a stage or wildlife, that is the difference between a usable photo and a smudge.
Second, low light and video. The 17 Pro’s main sensor is physically larger, which helps in dim rooms, and it records 4K at 120 fps in Dolby Vision, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and supports genlock for multi camera shoots. The iPhone 17 tops out at 4K 60 fps Dolby Vision, which is still excellent for family video. We break down every lens on the Pro, with test scores, in our iPhone 17 Pro camera guide.
Battery life and charging
Apple rates the iPhone 17 at up to 30 hours of video playback and the 17 Pro at up to 33 hours. Streamed video is 27 versus 30 hours. The Pro carries a bigger cell: in the US models, which are eSIM only, it is about 4,252 mAh against 3,692 mAh, according to EU energy label filings and teardowns. That covers the extra demands of the faster GPU and the 12 GB of memory.
In practice, both comfortably last a full day. Heavy users who shoot a lot of video or game on the go will feel the Pro’s extra three hours. Charging is identical: 50 percent in about 20 minutes with a 40W or stronger USB C adapter, and up to 25W on MagSafe and Qi2. Price in October 2026: what each costs now
The pricing picture changed this fall. On September 9, 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro launch, Apple raised the price of the phones it kept selling by $100 and quietly discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max.
| iPhone 17 | iPhone 17 Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Launch price, September 2025 | $799 (256GB) | $1,099 (256GB) |
| Apple price, October 2026 | $899 (256GB) | Not sold by Apple |
| Where to buy now | Apple, carriers, retailers | Carriers, retailers, resellers, refurbished |
| Apple trade in value (up to) | Still sold new by Apple | $785 |
So the real comparison today is the iPhone 17 at $899 against whatever price a carrier or reseller asks for a 17 Pro. Carriers such as AT&T ran offers of up to $1,100 off a 17 Pro with an eligible trade in right after the discontinuation, paid as monthly bill credits, which can make the Pro the cheaper phone on a monthly plan. If you are paying cash, compare against the new iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199, which adds a variable aperture main camera. Our iPhone 18 Pro Max price guide lists every configuration.
Worth knowing
Buying a used or refurbished 17 Pro? Check Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health before you pay. A phone that has been used hard for a year can already sit near 90 percent, and a replacement later costs $119 at Apple. Our iPhone battery replacement cost guide lists the fee for every model.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the iPhone 17
You want the best value iPhone. You get the same 120Hz screen, the same selfie camera, nearly the same battery life and a lighter phone, with 256GB as standard, for $899 at Apple.
Buy the iPhone 17 Pro
You zoom a lot, shoot serious video, play demanding games for long sessions, or move big files over USB. The 4x and 8x telephoto alone justifies it for parents, travelers and concert goers.
Consider the iPhone 18 Pro
You want a Pro and you are paying full price anyway. It starts at $1,199, adds a variable aperture main camera and the A20 Pro chip, and Apple still sells it.
Our take
For most people the iPhone 17 is the smarter buy. Apple closed the screen gap that used to separate the two lines, so the Pro is now a specialist phone: brilliant for zoom photography and video, but heavier and harder to buy new. Pick the Pro only if you can name the feature you will use every week.
