Garmin has pushed a new public beta to two of its most popular everyday watches, and it is bigger than the usual bug sweep. Beta 19.15 landed on October 20 for the Forerunner 970 and the Venu 4 (the Venu 4S is covered too), bundling dozens of fixes with a handful of changes you will notice on your wrist, including better swim tracking and move alerts you can finally snooze.

It is a beta, so it is not for everyone. Here is what is in it, which fixes matter, and whether it is worth enrolling before the stable release arrives.

    Quick take

Beta 19.15 lists 28 items on the Forerunner 970 (18 of them bug fixes) and 22 items on the Venu 4 (14 of them bug fixes). The headline items are better swim length and stroke detection, snoozable move alerts, delayed notifications during hard intervals and a fix for restarts when you start a GPS activity with Bluetooth headphones connected. The current stable build is still 18.32 from October 6, and Garmin has not announced a date for 19.15 to go stable.

The Changes You Will Actually Notice

Long changelogs hide the useful bits. These are the ones that affect daily use on both watches.

    Swim tracking gets a tune-up

Garmin says it improves the accuracy of swim length and swim stroke type detection. That is a short line with a big payoff for pool swimmers, because length counting and stroke labels drive everything else in a swim summary: pace, SWOLF and total distance. There is no accuracy figure attached, so treat it as a promise to test in your own pool rather than a measured result. A related fix repairs the Spoken Watch Face, which stopped working after swimming.

Move alerts finally bend to your day

Move alerts now get manual snooze options and automatic suppression conditions. If the nudge to stand up has ever buzzed during a meeting or a long drive, this is the change for you. Garmin does not list the exact suppression rules in the notes, so expect to find them in the settings once you install the build.

    Less interruption during hard efforts

A fix delays notifications that used to appear in the middle of high-intensity intervals, so a text message no longer covers the screen while you are halfway through a 400 meter repeat. Auto Lap prompts also now announce lap numbers, and the activity discard behavior has been updated for sessions longer than 30 seconds, which should make accidental data loss a little harder.

Stability fixes for the annoying stuff

Several fixes target restarts, which is the category owners complain about most:

    • A restart when starting a GPS activity with Bluetooth headphones connected.
    • A reboot while answering a phone call on the watch.
    • An occasional device reset on shutdown.
    • Inconsistent Bluetooth headset volume control and syncing.
    • A battery drain bug that could happen while using Alipay.

    Why the headphone fix matters

Running with Bluetooth earbuds is the default for a lot of Forerunner owners. A watch that restarts at the exact moment you press start is the worst kind of bug, because you often only notice after you have already lost the first minutes of a run.

    Forerunner 970 Extras

The Forerunner picks up six items the Venu 4 does not list, and most are about navigation and workouts:

    ChangeWhat it means
Pause menu fixResume can be reached by wrapping around the list
Garmin Explore rebootFixes a restart while processing Explore data
Map roadsSome roads no longer render as thick black lines
Course turn guidanceFull page turn guidance only shows when you are not on the map page
POI searchFaster search results for points of interest
Alert volumeVolume no longer unmutes itself after silent mode is turned on

If you mostly run and follow courses, the map and turn guidance changes are the quiet winners here. Both watches share the rest: a Change Sport menu that shows favorite activities first with a More option, a Pulse Ox app that only blocks vibrations while it is taking a reading, a Find My Device alert fix, and instructions for entering pairing mode on the HRM 200 and 600 straps.

    How Garmin’s Beta Rhythm Looks

The Forerunner 970 has had a steady stream of builds since August. Betas usually lead stable releases by a day or a few, which is why many owners simply wait for the stable build instead of enrolling.

Beta 18.32 arrived on October 5 and went stable the next day. Beta 19.15 is also the first build in the 19.x series on this list.

That pattern is useful context but not a promise. Garmin has not said when, or whether, 19.15 will reach the stable channel as is, and a follow-up beta could land first. If you want a sense of how long stubborn problems can linger on other models, our report on the Fenix 8 brightness bug and its pending fix is a good reminder that a fix with no date can wait a while.

    How to Get the Beta

Beta builds arrive automatically once your watch is enrolled in Garmin’s beta program. To check for the update, go to Main Menu, Settings, System, Software Update, Check For Updates on the watch. If you are not enrolled yet, you will need to join the program through Garmin first. Back up anything you cannot lose before you do, and remember that a beta can bring its own new bugs.

    Reasons to install it

    • ✓ You swim and want better lap and stroke data
    • ✓ Your watch restarts with Bluetooth earbuds
    • ✓ Move alerts annoy you at work
    • ✓ You follow courses on the Forerunner 970

    Reasons to wait

    • ~ You race soon and need a rock-solid watch
    • ~ No stable release date has been given
    • ~ Swim accuracy gains are not yet measured
    • ~ Betas can introduce new bugs

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is Garmin Beta 19.15?

It is a public beta software build released on October 20, 2026 for the Forerunner 970 and the Venu 4 and Venu 4S. It is not the stable software, which is still version 18.32.

Does Beta 19.15 improve swim tracking?

Garmin’s notes say it improves the accuracy of swim length and swim stroke type detection on both watches. No numbers were published, so results will vary.

Can I snooze move alerts now?

Yes. The beta adds manual snooze options and automatic suppression conditions for move alerts.

When will 19.15 reach the stable channel?

Garmin has not announced a date. Earlier betas have sometimes become stable within a day or a few days, but that is not guaranteed.

Is it safe to install a Garmin beta?

Betas are meant for testing and may contain bugs. If you depend on your watch for a race or for safety features, waiting for the stable build is the cautious choice.

    Final Verdict

    The Bottom Line

Beta 19.15 is a practical, quality-of-life update rather than a flashy one. Swim detection, snoozable move alerts and the headphone restart fix are the three changes most owners will feel. If you are comfortable with betas, it is worth trying now. If your watch is your race-day tool, hold off until Garmin pushes it to the stable channel.
