Google Confirms Pixel Watch Battery Drain Bug: Watches Are Dying in 12 Hours, and a Fix Is Coming

If your Pixel Watch has suddenly started asking for a charger before dinner, you are not imagining it. Over the past few days, owners across several Pixel Watch generations have reported a sharp drop in battery life, and on October 29 Google confirmed that the problem is real and that a fix is on the way.

The bad news is that Google has not said what caused the drain or when the update will land. Here is everything we know so far, what has helped some owners in the meantime, and what to do if you are tempted to wipe your watch.

    Quick take

Owners of the Pixel Watch 2, 3, 4 and 5 report battery life falling from a normal 24 to 48 hours to about 12 hours, even while the watch sits idle. Google says the issue affects “a small number” of users and that it is working on a fix “as soon as possible.” There is no cause and no release date yet. Restarting helps some people, and a factory reset helps a few, but nothing works for everyone.

What Pixel Watch Owners Are Reporting

The complaints first showed up on Reddit and were picked up by Android Authority, Android Police and others. The stories are remarkably similar. A watch that used to last a day or two now needs a charge in roughly half a day, and the drop happens even when the watch is lying on a nightstand doing nothing.

What makes this more than a one-off glitch is the spread. Reports cover the Pixel Watch 2, 3, 4 and the new Pixel Watch 5. When four hardware generations misbehave at the same time, aging batteries are an unlikely explanation. It points to something in the software they all share, such as a background service or a recent update.

Pixel Watch battery life, normal versus reported during the drain bug Normal battery life of 24 to 48 hours compared with about 12 hours reported by affected owners. What Google Has Said

Google responded directly on the same Reddit threads where the problem was first discussed, through its PixelCommunity account. According to Android Authority, the message reads:

We have identified a battery drain issue, affecting a small number of Pixel Watch users, and are working to roll out a fix as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Smartwatch for COPD in 2026: What It Can and Cannot Track

That is useful in two ways. It confirms the bug is real and not a user settings problem, and it suggests Google has already found the cause, since you do not usually promise a fix without one. What it does not give us is a timeline. “As soon as possible” could mean a server-side change this week or a full watch update later in November.

    Who Is Affected

Pixel Watch 2YesAlready past its support window, so a fix is not guaranteed
Pixel Watch 3YesIncluded in multi-generation reports
Pixel Watch 4YesIncluded in multi-generation reports
Pixel Watch 5YesThe newest model, on sale at record low prices this week

The Pixel Watch 2 point is our own context. Google has not said which models will get the fix.

The Pixel Watch 2 is the awkward one. Its official support ended on October 1, and we covered what that means in our guide to what happens when Pixel Watch 2 support ends. Google has not said whether the battery fix will reach it, so owners of that model should watch for an announcement rather than assume.

    What Might Be Behind It

Google has not named a cause, so anything here is informed guessing. Gadgets & Wearables points out that the timing lines up with a substantial Pixel Watch 5 update in September and with the ongoing rollout of Google’s health platform changes, including features such as Health Guardian. We covered how that feature works in our piece on Google’s Health Guardian rollout. Constant background health monitoring is exactly the kind of thing that can quietly drain a battery if it gets stuck in a loop.

There is also a precedent. Android Police notes that the most recent comparable problem was in 2024, when a bad update caused severe battery drain on the Pixel Watch. Back then it was also hard to pin down at first, and a later update fixed it. That history is a reasonable reason for optimism, though it also shows these fixes can take a while.

    Good to know

Not everyone is affected. Plenty of owners say their Pixel Watch is behaving normally, which fits Google’s “small number of users” wording. If your battery life looks the same as it did last month, you do not need to do anything.

What You Can Try While You Wait

There is no reliable workaround, and Google has not published an official one. These are the steps owners and reporters have mentioned, ordered from least to most effort.

    StepEffortReported result
Restart the watch1 minuteHelps some owners, not all
Install any pending updates5 minutesMay pick up the fix once it ships
Turn on Battery Saver1 minuteLimits damage, does not fix the cause
Switch LTE to automatic or off1 minuteGoogle’s own battery advice for cellular models
Turn off Always-on Display1 minuteMade little difference for many affected owners
Factory reset and set up again30+ minutesRestored normal life for a few, failed for others

Our advice is to skip the factory reset unless the watch is genuinely unusable. It is a lot of effort for something Google says it is already fixing, and the reports show it does not work every time. A restart, Battery Saver and a daily top-up on the charger will get most people through the next few days.

The September link to the bug is a suspect raised by reporters, not something Google has confirmed.

Bad Timing for the Pixel Watch 5

The timing is awkward for Google. According to 9to5Google, the Pixel Watch 5 just matched its all-time low price on Amazon, with the 41mm Wi-Fi model at $299.99 (down from $399.99) and the 45mm Wi-Fi at $329.99. LTE versions are also $100 off. Early Black Friday shoppers who buy now will be getting a watch that is, for some owners, running into this bug.

Should you hold off? For most people, we would say no, as long as you can return it. A confirmed bug with a fix in progress is a far less worrying thing than an unexplained hardware flaw. If you want a refresher on what the watch does well, our Pixel Watch 5 review roundup collects the verdicts, and it is worth keeping the return window in mind before you commit.

Snapdragon Wear Elite Explained: What Qualcomm’s New Smartwatch Chip Really Changes

Which Pixel Watch models have the battery drain bug?

Owner reports cover the Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5. Google has not published an official list of affected models.

    Has Google confirmed the problem?

Yes. Google said on Reddit that it has identified a battery drain issue affecting a small number of Pixel Watch users and is working to roll out a fix as soon as possible.

    When will the fix arrive?

Google has not given a date. Based on the 2024 incident, a fix could take days to a few weeks, but that is an estimate, not a promise.

Will a factory reset fix it?

Sometimes. A few owners say it restored normal battery life, while others saw no change. Because the fix is already in the works, a reset is probably not worth the effort for most people.

Does turning off Always-on Display help?

Not reliably. Android Authority notes that disabling it did not make much difference for many affected owners, since the drain happens even when the watch is idle.

    Final Verdict

    The Bottom Line

The Pixel Watch battery bug looks like a software problem that hits a minority of owners hard, and Google has already said it knows the cause. Restart your watch, turn on Battery Saver, charge it daily and wait for the update before you try anything drastic. If your watch is running normally, there is nothing to do. We will update this article when Google announces a release date.
