Apple now sells two iPhones that exist mainly to prove a point about design. The iPhone Air, launched in September 2025, showed Apple could build a 5.6mm phone. The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable, arrived in October and is even thinner when you open it: just 5.2mm. Fold it shut, though, and it becomes an 11.3mm slab that weighs 89 grams more than the Air.
That single contrast sums up the choice. Both phones look and feel premium, and both make compromises to hit their shapes. The Air gives up cameras and battery. The Duo gives up Face ID, pocket comfort and roughly $900 of your money. TechRadar put the two head to head this week, and we went through Apple’s spec sheets, EveryMac’s hardware breakdown and our own earlier coverage to make the decision as clear as possible.

Green marks the advantage, red a clear weakness. Both phones have a titanium frame, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, IP68 water resistance and eSIM only in the US.
Price: the gap is $900 at every tier
The iPhone Air launched at $999 last year. Apple raised it to $1,099 at its September 2026 event, citing memory costs, so the Air is no longer the bargain it once looked like. Even so, the Duo sits in another bracket entirely.
The Air is also discounted regularly at Amazon and the carriers, while the Duo is still hard to find at all. In practice, the real gap is often more than $900. That money could buy an Air plus an 11-inch iPad, and the total would still come in under the price of a 256GB Duo.
If you are weighing the Duo against Apple’s regular flagship instead, we found that the extra money over the iPhone 18 Pro mostly buys a tablet, not a better phone, and that comparison follows the same logic.
Design: thinner open, much chunkier closed
Apple deserves credit for both of these phones. The Air is one of the most comfortable iPhones ever made, and at 165 grams it nearly disappears in a pocket. The Duo is a feat of engineering, thinner than the Air when unfolded, with a hinge that reviewers have broadly praised.
But you carry a phone closed far more often than you hold it open, and closed, the Duo is a different object.
Durability is similar on paper. Both have titanium frames, Ceramic Shield 2 glass and IP68 ratings. Foldables are still more fragile by nature, and the Duo’s launch was not spotless: Apple has acknowledged an issue affecting a “small number” of units. We covered how Apple is handling cracked Duo inner screens, including what a repair costs once the free swap window closes.
Displays: one great screen or two
Screen quality is close. Both phones use LTPO OLED panels that run from 1Hz to 120Hz and peak at 3,000 nits, and the Air’s 6.5-inch screen is sharp and punchy. The Duo’s advantage is simply area: its 7.6-inch inner display has more than twice the viewable space of the Air when unfolded.
The Duo’s inner screen also gets Apple’s matte nano-texture finish. It cuts glare very well and hides the crease when you look at it straight on. Tilt it and the crease reappears, but in normal use it fades from view. The Duo also supports the Apple Pencil, which turns it into a pocket notebook in a way no other iPhone can match.
Cameras: the Duo is more flexible, the Air takes better selfies
Neither of these is Apple’s best camera phone. That title belongs to the Pro models with their telephoto lenses. Between these two, though, the trade is clear:
- Rear: Both use a 48MP f/1.6 main camera. The Duo adds a 48MP ultrawide with a 120-degree field of view. The Air has no ultrawide at all.
- Front: The Air’s 18MP Center Stage camera is the better selfie camera. The Duo has a 12MP camera on the cover screen and a weak 4MP camera under the inner display, meant for video calls.
- Zoom: Neither has a telephoto lens. Both crop into the main sensor for 2x shots.
Performance and software
The Duo runs the A20 Pro, the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, with a vapor chamber to manage heat. The Air uses last year’s A19 Pro without one. For everyday use, both feel fast. Under sustained gaming, the Air can run warm, and some reviewers noticed it heating up during long FaceTime calls.
Both phones run iOS 27.2 now. The Duo has extra multitasking tricks, such as a side dock, but app support is still catching up. Apple’s own apps look great on the big screen, while some major third-party apps, including YouTube and Instagram, still need work. If your daily routine depends on a specific app, check how it behaves on the Duo before you commit.
Battery and charging: a clear win for the Duo
The Air’s thin body leaves room for only a 3,149mAh battery. The Duo fits 4,883mAh, about 55% more. Apple rates the Duo for up to 44 hours of video on the cover screen and 31 hours on the inner display, against 27 hours for the Air. Reviewers found the Duo comfortably lasts a full day, while heavy Air users often need a top-up before bedtime.
Keep in mind that claims and real-world results do not always line up on foldables. Independent testing of Android foldables has shown that big inner screens drain batteries faster than spec sheets suggest.
What each phone leaves out
| The iPhone Duo is missing | The iPhone Air is missing |
|---|---|
| Face ID (it uses Touch ID in the side button) | An ultrawide camera |
| The Action button | Stereo speakers |
| A good selfie camera on the inner screen | Fast USB 3 data transfer |
| Fully optimized third-party apps (for now) | Apple Pencil support and a 2TB option |
| A wide choice of colors (just two) | Truly all-day battery for heavy users |
Which one should you buy?
- You want the lightest, most comfortable iPhone you can buy
- Face ID and the Action button are part of your daily habits
- You care about selfies and video calls more than ultrawide shots
- You would rather spend the $900 on an iPad, a Mac or nothing at all
- You read, watch or work on your phone for hours and want a tablet-sized screen with you
- You want the longest battery life and fastest chip of the two
- You would use Apple Pencil for notes or sketches on the go
- You are comfortable being an early adopter, with the app quirks that come with it
Still torn between thin and powerful? Our comparison of the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Air shows what an extra $100 gets you in Apple’s single-screen lineup, which might be the better middle ground.
