Apple spent June selling everyone on a rebuilt Siri, an assistant that reads your screen, understands your personal context, and actually does things inside apps instead of offering to search the web. It shipped in developer betas over the summer and lands publicly with iOS 27 in September. The part that has quietly become the story is who gets it, because “your iPhone supports iOS 27” and “your iPhone supports the new Siri” turn out to be two very different sentences.
The Three Tiers, Plainly
Apple has not marketed this as a tiered rollout, which is part of why it is confusing. But functionally that is what it is, and it is worth laying out before you go looking at your own phone.

The awkward middle of that table is the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. They are two years old, they run iOS 27 fine, and they sit on the wrong side of the Siri line because the Pro models that year shipped with different silicon and more memory. Anyone who bought the non-Pro iPhone 15 in 2023 is about to discover that the distinction they shrugged off at the till is the one that matters now.
What the New Siri Actually Does
It is worth understanding what is being gated, because the gap between old Siri and Siri AI is not cosmetic.
Apple’s pitch is that Siri now combines three inputs it never had access to before. There is personal context, meaning it can reason across your photos, messages, emails, files, and calendar with permission. There is on-screen awareness, meaning it can see what you are currently looking at and answer questions about it. And there is web knowledge for the things that live outside your device.
Stack those together and the assistant stops being a voice-activated search box. You can ask it to pull the vacation photos from a specific trip into a shared album, or to surface the email you flagged last week without remembering who sent it, or to answer a question about the thing currently on your screen without describing it first.
The fourth piece is App Actions, which lets third-party developers register specific things Siri can trigger inside their apps, informed by what is on screen and what Siri knows about you. That is the part with the longest tail. It only becomes genuinely useful once a critical mass of apps has adopted it, which will take quarters rather than weeks.
Why the Cutoff Lands Where It Does
The suspicion whenever Apple draws a hardware line is that it is a sales tactic. In this case the technical explanation is reasonably solid, even if the commercial upside is obviously convenient.
Running a language model on-device rather than in a data center is primarily a memory problem. The model weights have to sit in RAM alongside everything else the phone is doing, and if they do not fit, the system either swaps constantly or refuses. The iPhone 15 Pro was the point where Apple moved to 8GB of RAM on the Pro line, while the standard iPhone 15 stayed at 6GB. That single specification difference is the cleanest explanation for why the line falls between two phones released on the same day.
The Neural Engine generation matters too, since the throughput available for on-device inference sets how fast responses come back, and an assistant that takes six seconds to answer is an assistant nobody uses twice.
None of this is unique to Apple. The entire industry is discovering that on-device AI has a memory bill attached, and that bill is already reshaping what manufacturers can afford to put in budget phones. Apple is simply drawing the line at the top of its range rather than the bottom.
How to Check What You Have
If you are not sure which tier your phone falls into, this takes about fifteen seconds.
- Open Settings, then General, then About.
- Read the Model Name field. It will say something like iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 14.
- Compare it against the table above. The word “Pro” on a model from 2023 is the deciding factor; from 2024 onward, check the generation.
One thing worth flagging: feature availability can also depend on region and language at launch. Apple has historically staggered assistant features by locale, and there is no reason to expect Siri AI to arrive everywhere simultaneously. A supported phone in a market that has not been switched on yet will still be waiting.
Is This Worth Upgrading For?
The honest answer depends on how much you currently use Siri, and for most people that number is close to zero.
If Siri is something you invoke twice a week to set a timer, an assistant that can reason about your calendar is a nice idea that will not change your day. Buying a new phone for it is hard to justify, particularly since the App Actions ecosystem that makes it genuinely powerful is not built out yet. Waiting a cycle costs you very little and lets someone else find the rough edges.
If you actually live inside your phone for work, the calculation shifts. Cross-app tasks that currently take four or five manual steps are the specific thing this is designed to collapse, and that compounds daily.
There is also a middle path that costs nothing. Plenty of the capability being gated here is available through third-party assistants that run in the cloud and do not care what silicon you have, and the current crop of AI apps for iPhone covers a lot of the same ground. What they cannot do is reach into your photo library and your calendar with system-level permissions, which is precisely the moat Apple is building.
The Bigger Pattern
Step back and this is the clearest expression yet of the strategy Apple laid out at WWDC. The company spent years positioning software updates as the great equalizer, the thing that kept a five-year-old iPhone feeling current. On-device AI breaks that promise, because capability is now tied to memory and neural throughput in a way that a software update cannot paper over.
That shift was visible the moment Apple reframed its AI approach at WWDC 2026, and this compatibility list is what it looks like in practice. The support window for the operating system is still seven years. The support window for the features people actually see in advertisements is now closer to three.
iOS 27 is expected in the second week of September, following Apple’s usual pattern. If your phone is on the list, you will get a genuinely different assistant. If it is not, you will get an update that is largely indistinguishable from what you have now, and an increasingly strong hint about what Apple would like you to do about that.
